STOP IT!

I’m saying this with love because ‘overthinking it’ is one of the #1 reasons why we self-sabotage and talk ourselves out of things before even getting started with a project or working towards a goal.

Here’s why:

EVERYBODY has a strategy for stopping, yes that includes yours truly.

We all do it when the right ‘trigger’ gets activated.

It’s a way that our subconscious mind puts on the brakes when we’re getting just a tad too far outside of our safety zone.

But let’s get back to the specific example of overthinking it and what you can do about it next time it happens so that you can move forward.

The topic came up in a client conversation where the person got sucked so deep into the abyss of negative thinking that she was going to throw in the towel BEFORE even getting started because she made up a problem in her mind that DIDN’T even exist.

When we overthink it, we complicate things.

When it gets too complicated, DOUBT starts creeping in.

The internal dialog gets more and more negative by the minute.

I dunno about this…

Can I really do this…

What if…

No, it’s too much…

I can’t…

We start questioning our abilities and then it’s just a split second until this turns into full-blown FEAR.

Then the fight or flight mechanism kicks in and we want to run for the hills…

We throw in the towel and we stop.

GAME OVER!

So how can you overcome this?

It requires some discipline on your part to train yourself to think accurately, according to what is true, regardless of appearances.

This starts with you becoming aware that overthinking it is one of your stopping strategies and then DECIDE right now how you’re going to react DIFFERENTLY the next time it happens (because it will.)

HOW?

1. Keep it SIMPLE.

If you’re noticing that you’re getting into your spin cycle, put on the brakes consciously and ask yourself this question:

How can I simplify this?

When the answer comes up, ask yourself the next question.

How can I make this even more easy for myself?

Can you feel yourself relaxing here a little bit already?

Your mind is programmed to answer questions, so ask it a BETTER question.

2. Rely on your TRUTH.

Ask yourself what is really true about the situation or circumstance.

In the case of my client, it was completely unfounded, yet she began doubting her abilities and then it spiraled out of control from there.

When she reconnected with her truth, she was able to see the fake story she had created in her mind that kept her stuck and away from taking action.

This stuff comes up for all of us and it can happen at any moment on the journey to reaching your goal.

That’s why it’s so important to surround yourself with people who can bring you back to your truth, so you can unpack the ‘fake news’ of the story and see it for what it really is:

A last-ditch effort of your subconscious mind to stop you from

growing out of your comfort zone.

That’s when a coach or mentor is really helpful because they see the iceberg coming a mile away and can help you safely navigate these treacherous waters so that you can give yourself a different experience.

That’s how your subconscious mind learns that the activity you’re undertaking is SAFE and it will no longer stop it.

So next time, you find yourself in overthinking mode, keep it simple and keep moving forward.

Because your great gift is needed in the world.

You got this!
